About Mt. Joy

Mt. Joy began when Matt Quinn and Sam Cooper reunited in Los Angeles in 2016. They had previously met in high school in Philadelphia and were surprised by the lucky turn of fate. As it turns out, they both enjoyed making music and their shared backgrounds made it an easy choice to unite and work on music together. 

They named their project after a mountain in Valley Forge, National Park near where they grew up. And they recorded the single “Astrovan” with the help of bassist Michael Byrnes, who they met on Craigslist and producer Caleb Nelson.

The song found success on streaming platforms which was matched by their second single, “Sheep”, which drew the three to add drummer Sotiris Eliopoulos and keyboardist Jackie Miclau to the group. The band then went on tour, playing at various festivals across the country and opening for bands such as The Head and the Heart, The Shins, Whitney, and The Revivalists. This led to the band signing a record deal with Dualtone Records in 2017.

The newly formed five-piece band recorded tracks throughout 2017. They then released their self-titled debut album on March 2, 2018. The album’s single, “Silver Lining” went to the top of the Billboard Triple A charts. And as of June 2020, the album has been streamed more than 200 million times on Spotify.

Mt. Joy Today

With three successful album releases and a score of concert appearances and performances, you might think that Mt. Joy already has their hands full. But the band has taken part in activism with their music. This includes setting up a Live Stream with other artists to raise over $30,000 in funds to donate to Music Cares and Philabundance. The band has also been openly urging their listeners to amplify black voices and protest peacefully in the wake of the murder of George Floyd.
